When we often talk about home security fences, we will include a snippet about pool fences. The reason for this is a pool security fence saves lives. There is no advertising needed more than that. If you have small children or ever have anyone whom has small children visit, it would be in your best interest to have a fence around your pool. Even without children or visiting children, it is crucial to have a fence. There have been many stories of neighboring children wandering into others backyards and finding an unfenced pool. Drowning is the second highest cause of death for kids under 14, obviously this is centered more on younger children but you understand the purpose. These are not scare tactics, just truth. All it takes is a few seconds at a barbecue, the loud noise, people distracting you, and your life is changed forever.

To save yourself this kind of trouble and heartache, a pool security fence is what you need. Depending on if its aboveground, built into a deck or your standard pool, there is no one type of fence. As long as it is sturdy, high enough, and locks, you should be ok. Something with vertical bar design would be good to disable any “climbers” that may come up against your fence.

A pool safety fence should be at least 5 feet high if not taller, with anti-climbable features. It would be wise to not have any objects nearby that could assist someone in climbing the fence. Rock piles, easily movable tables, chairs, and any other objects that could assist a child. A latch with an alarm can be included if perhaps the pool is not easily within eye or ear shot. A high latch is also a good idea.

Other advice that we can give is things like having a phone nearby as well as knowing CPR just incase the worst should happen. Honestly, everyone should know the basics of CPR, they could come in handy.

There really is no other protection better than a fence for your pool, teaching your children to swim as young as possible is a good idea but should not be substituted for a fence. Be responsible for your pool, it’s a luxury and can be a dangerous one if not prepared.

Owning horses is one of life’s greatest pleasures. These gorgeous creatures are powerful, elegant, and extremely intelligent. Of course, they also represent a substantial investment of time and money. However, with the right planning, the proper equipment, and a high quality horse fence, you can spend less time on maintenance and more time enjoying your animals.

Designing a Horse Farm

When it comes to owning or stabling horses, it’s best to start with a sound design. Engaging an expert to do horse farm consulting will go far to ensure that your experience will be rewarding and that your horses will have exactly what they need to live long and healthy lives.

A good horse farm consultant will come to your property and assess your needs as well as the lay of the land. He will talk to you about the horses you currently own and those you plan to buy, as well as how they will be trained and used. If you have a business, he will ask about your business goals, whether or not you will have boarders, and the ways in which your property can bring you the most enjoyment.

Once he has this information, he will design a plan for maximum functionality with minimum maintenance. The plan can include the positioning of the house, barn, paddocks, pastures, gates, training areas, and riding areas. Horse farm consulting may also include suggestions about manure management, pasture management, and barn equipment. An expert who has years of experience in horse farm management can literally save you thousands of dollars by avoiding wasted space and poorly planned designs.

Fencing for Horses

Next to the design process, the right horse fencing is key to keeping your property low on the maintenance scale and high on the enjoyment scale. Today, vinyl horse fencing is considered state-of-the-art. A vinyl horse fence has many advantages over other types of fencing, including value and durability. However, not all vinyl horse fencing is created equally. Some sellers, for example, sell shorter posts, have shoddy customer service, or mix other products with your order.

When selecting a horse fence, it’s important to find one that is made from 100 percent virgin vinyl and comes with a lifetime warranty. The best distributors will even offer a second warranty to replace rails or posts that your horses break. The best horse fence comes in two rail sizes: standard 1.5-inch by 5.5-inch that are .090 thickness, and oversized 2-inch by 6-inch that are .110 thickness. The rails should have locking tabs to keep them in place, thus eliminating the need for screws, bolts, and clips.

To determine how much vinyl horse fending you will need, you should be able to simply measure the perimeter of the area to be fenced. Then, for example, you can buy a three-rail system by the lineal foot, which will include all of the rails, posts, and caps you need for the fence.

The right design and the proper horse fence will save you money, make your life easier, and help to ensure that your horses are safe, healthy, and secure.

If you are in a high populated area, you may receive unwanted guests knocking at your door at all hours. Preserving your privacy is an important thing in your home, if you cant have it there, where can you? The hassle of constant sales people or nosy neighbors can be a pain if you really just want to be left alone. Not having people over unless otherwise invited is not something to be ashamed of, its your home and you should be able to have your quiet time.

Having a protective barrier of some kind will be key in keeping out unwanted guests. You might be thinking that you will need a 20 foot barbed wire fence in order to get your message across, but this is not the case. Having a simple fence with your basic locking gate will be enough to keep most people out. Generally a salesperson is not going to hop your fence as there is always another house not far away without a gate, and your neighbor will do the same.

If some uninvited person is hoping that fence to get to you door, then there are bigger problems than just the simple salesperson or nosey neighbor. That is where something like a security dog will come in handy. If you are dealing with the next level of snoop that isn’t deterred by a fence, than a security dog will be good to stop them in their tracks. A lot of times, people are not scared of guns, you could have a 5 foot high picture of an ak-47 on your fence and people will ignore it, but dogs are always feared. There is something about a dog that is just more fearsome then a person with a gun, maybe cause dogs don’t miss.

You can even go one step further by investing in some surveillance cameras. This is great if you are in an area that is having increased break-ins or vandalism. Sometimes you get the occasional group of delinquents roaming through that wants nothing more than to cause other people trouble. Don’t feel too paranoid if you are thinking about having a security surveillance system. There is nothing wrong with trying to feel safe from unknown trouble. Sooner or later, you might have a burglar or someone just causing trouble come along and target your house, having them on tape is better than all other defenses you have.

We all want a yard that is easy to manage and needs as little maintenance as possible. This is something that can be done either by a professional or by doing it yourself. Whichever route you choose you will want the goal to be the same, having a yard that takes little effort to look great all year. If you do go with a professional just be clear that your goal is to have something great looking with as little work needed for upkeep as possible.

If you have less grass in your front yard landscaping then you will cut out a lot of maintenance time right there. Mowing the lawn can take up a lot of time and energy so keeping the grass to a minimum is a great way to save on work. Talk to the front yard landscaping expert about alternative that you can use to keep your yard look good with little lawn area.

Some people choose to use clover instead of grass. Using a clover lawn in your front yard landscaping is a good idea because it will save you money and time. You will not have to mow it very often at all and a clover lawn is even good for front yard landscaping in area that is prone to droughts. They do well virtually everywhere. And best of all for those who want to get out there and enjoy their front yard landscaping, bugs hate clover.

Watering the yard can be a big hassle as well. That is why many people incorporate automatic irrigation systems into their front yard landscaping designs these days. This can save you tons of time and money. This is one of the easiest ways for you to keep your yard looking healthy and well watered during the hotter months of the year. No more hooking up the sprinkler or having to drag out the hose. You can get a professional to install one of these systems for your front yard landscaping design quickly and easily or you can get a kit and do it yourself. I would recommend getting in a professional however, unless you have experience with this kind of thing. If you were to cause a leak then you could face some flooding and rotting and neither of these is going to do anything for your front yard landscaping, do you know what I mean?

Whichever type of fence you decide to go with, you are going to need to get some reliable posts. Choosing Steel Fence Posts will give your fence a durable and solid backbone that should hold out throughout the years. You certainly can go for a traditional look of wooden fence posts if it works better with your plan, but going steel will not be a regrettable decision.

There are a few kinds of these posts depending on your needs such as a T-Post. This is a very simple type of post that makes for a nice straight line, generally not used in corners but there are joints available to do that if you wish. These come with a driving tool which allows easy installation. The driving tool is a weighted bar that you can slide up and down the pole easily setting it into place. T posts are more common in the United States.

Y Posts are similar to a T post in form and function. The end result gives the look more of a Y shape than a T shape. These types of posts are more common in Australia and New Zealand where they are commonly called “Waratahs” after the company that patent them.

For a more long term fence, a steel post would be a much better option. Wooden fence posts may be more aesthetically pleasing but come with many limitations. Steel posts are Fire proof, much lighter in weight yet much more durable, and a lot easier to drive into place. Steel fence posts do cost more than wooden ones but can make up for it in the long run for their dependability.

Remember to install them properly, spacing them no further than 12 feet apart. At the same time you do not need to place them extremely close, adding unneeded posts is more work and more money you will not want to waste. Ten to twelve feet apart is a good distance. If you have to make it shorter in certain parts for corners or end of a border, then of course that is fine.

Also once everything is complete, remember to cap the posts. These posts can have sharp edges at the top from the machine cut and can really harm you or animals that come in contact with that part of the post. If you were not provided caps with your posts you can easily find them for pretty cheap at any hardware store. You don’t want to find yourself going to the doctor for a tetanus shot for something that would cost a few dollars for an entire pack

Along with these posts there are always some interesting things we can find to add to our fences and fence posts to help them make a more pleasing presentation.

Solar Powered Stainless Steel Fence Post Light

These are great to add a little style to the ugly steel fence post while providing functionality. The light has a single bright white LED light bulb. It also comes with a black stake incase you rather use it on the ground to line a walkway or something similar. Completely Solar powered with no wires, the batteries are rechargeable and last up to 2 years. It’s great for any place that needs some light but does not have a nearby power source.

Safe-Fence Vinyl Sleeves for Steel T-Post White

These are neat little things that easily slip right onto any T-post style steel fence post, no extra tools needed. These really bring a nice clean look to your fence and are constructed of the same material as vinyl door frames and windows. They also will cover up and protect you from any sharp or rough parts from your post.

Safety Caps

There are simple plastic caps available that are very affordable and easily slip right into any steel t-post. There are a couple different styles you can choose from out depending on your needs. Safety Caps are essential for any t-post as their construction is solid but the tops of them can be a hazard if someone comes into contact to them with some force. Cutting yourself on metal that is outside is never a good thing.

If you are more interested in installing a chain link fence rather than Welded Wire or Vinyl or even Wood, that is ok too. Chain Link has been the goto yard fence for many generations now and it is still a useful. It is still seen as one of the most practical styles of fence and everyone at one point has probably had one.

Chain Link is commonly galvanized which is what gives the silver color. However, there are places which carry different colored chain link fencing if you are interested in that. You can get different levels of Chain Link Fence for whatever you need. If just simple small lawn boundary, go for light residential. If some serious protection you can go with heavy commercial for some serious protection. Even throw some barbed wire at the top to keep the neighbor kids out (just kidding! Sort of). Installing yourself isn’t too hard if you have the right plan, materials, tools, and some know-how.

One thing people tend to over look is the Chain Link Gates. We all know the simple swing gate with the latch, but some don’t know that there are more styles than that for you to choose from.

Chain Link Swing Gate

Of course, the practical and simple swing gate, still just as good as it always has been. Typical for small openings rather than large.

Chain Link Barrier Gates

This is great for giving you a bit more protection and security. Not specific to a style but more of its security.

Chain Link Rolling Gates

A simple slide gate that is supported on the leading edge of the gate by a wheel sliding along a simple track, many sizes are available for small walkway to a big driveway.

Chain Link Cantilever Gates

This is exactly what it sounds like, it’s a fence that cantilevers itself to open and close while being supported only on one end.

Chain Link Overhead Gates

Not typically in a residential setting. These are overhead sliding gates that are hung from an i-beam on a gate trolley and tracks.

There are many interesting things you can do. It doesn’t have to be a simple little swing gate. However, it sometimes comes down to what you need rather than want. A big opening will obviously benefit better from some style of slide gate rather than a massive swinging gate.

When you finally decide on putting in a vinyl fence, you will need a few things to get yourself started. Installing a vinyl fence yourself can be easy or hard depending on your know how and your plan of attack. However, doing it yourself will save you a nice chunk of change and give you the satisfaction that you created it, and pick a vinyl fence is a great idea since it wont rust or decay.

Once you choose your vinyl fencing you will need a few things to get you going.

A shovel, some rope with small stakes, adhesive, screwdriver and screws.

Make sure before you do anything that you are allowed to do this by the local building codes.

Do the initial gate assembly needed.

Stake out where you want your post holes and fence, make sure your measurements are correct according to the fence size.

Dig out your post holes about 2 ½ feet for a 5×5 12 foot post. Make sure all the dirt is cleared out and ready for the posts.

Put in and position the post so that it is centered, poor in the mixed concrete and be sure to get the post completely level before concrete sets.

You might want to tape off the parts where concrete may get on the fence so it does not dry onto it and stain, pretty hard getting off dry concrete without damaging it some. Insert lock rings on the ends of the rails. Then put the rail into the post and push in the locking rings till they are secure.

Continue putting in posts and railing where you want it, put blocks under the railing to get the position where you want it.

Insert the middle Fence rail into the post being sure that the holes are facing down.

Put in the pickets at the holes on the bottom rail. Once done, remove the middle rail so you can install the top rail with the aligned pickets and then once done reinstall both the middle and top rails onto the post.

Once all aligned and looking good, use wood screws to lock in the rails to the posts. Do for all sections

Install the gate however the instructions tell you to.

Once all finished, place the caps on the posts and use whatever is provided to secure them, adhesive, screws, etc.

If all goes well you should have your fence setup and ready to use. Take pride in your work and accomplishment.

If you are lacking some tools or items, check these out to help you along

Gerber 22-41578 Gorge Folding Shovel

Why you certainly could use any old shovel for this project, this one has many abilities and is great for more than just shoveling. It can be used as a pick and even a hammer to pound in those stakes. It’s great for taking on camping trips or just having a small portable multi-purpose shovel to throw in the truck to be ready for anything.

Black & Decker PD600 Pivot Plus 6-Volt Nicad Cordless Screwdriver with Articulating Head

Again, a brand new screwdriver is not needed for this project, but if you are a man who loves his building projects, make this part easier by having a reliable and easy to use power screwdriver. This cordless screwdriver has a pivoting handle that locks in 3 positions for versatile angle uses. This is a popular product by B&D and has received excellent reviews by beginners all the way to pros.

Fiskars 9653 Post Hole Digger

This is a professional post hole digger, designed for ease of use and with the narrow handle profile it provides more productive digging. its welded steel construction will give you years of use without fail.

The white picket fence look is a classic and most people love to have that. However, wood fences are something that is not reliable enough for most people. They are easily damaged and can be a hassle for upkeep. With a vinyl picket fence, you will be getting a wonderful fence that looks just as good if not better than wood with a durable material that doesn’t need anywhere near the maintenance of a wooden picket fence.

These are great for providing a barrier for your children and pets as well as unwanted visitors while adding a more friendly appeal to the home without looking like a security wall. You could also get a much taller privacy fence with vinyl with the same look as a wooden privacy fence. Installation is equal to wood, which is to say it isn’t an easy task for the average joe whichever way you go, but it is possible if you know what you are doing.

Differences Vinyl and Wood

Durability

When it comes down to strength and durability, Vinyl will come out on top. It is able to take more of a beating before it becomes damaged than a wooden fence would, however it won’t fair well against a large object like a vehicle backing into it.

Style

Vinyl fences are generally made to mimic those of the wooden picket fence. In look they can be close to identical, each come in various designs and colors. The only difference is vinyl is limited to lighter colors such as white, cream and light grey.

Maintenance

Probably the biggest difference between the two is the amount of upkeep. Wooden fences will need to be painted every couple of years and or stained. Nails sometimes come lose and need to be replaced. They also tend to have a problem with mildew and need to be cleaned off.

Vinyl should not take much if any upkeep. It needs no paint and its construction won’t come lose like wood. However, it will develop mold/mildew like a wooden fence but it is much easier to clean off with a simple scrub brush and soap. Sometimes a wooden fence is stained by the mildew and will need to be repainted.

Price

Overall the construction will be about 50%-100% more than a wooden fence. In the long run you should save with vinyl as it shouldn’t cost for any upkeep. After years or repainting and repairing a wooden fence, eventually it will cost more.

Conclusion

In the end it is really up to your taste and style and what you want to spend. Maybe you are just a fan of keeping the purity to the white picket fence and want a wooden fence. If you don’t mind the upkeep of it then you will not be missing out on vinyl. However, if you are not a fan of upkeep and want your fence looking fresh and new for a much longer period of time without having to do anything other than an occasional wash, then vinyl is more your speed.

It’s sturdier then other mesh fencing and does not need to be stretched out which really cuts down on the work. This fencing is pretty light yet durable, its composition is simply wire welded together to make a fence. There are several gauges you can choose from depending on your needs, obviously the higher the gauge the more durable the fence.

A welded wire fence has many uses. It works well if you are looking for something to line and protect your property. Perhaps you are trying to create an enclosed space to keep your children or pets safe. Another great use is creating a barrier around your garden to keep animals from getting in or burrowing through.

It can be installed above or below ground. If you are trying to keep out burrowing animals and critters, this can be buried below the ground for protection of gardens and whatnot. You should be able to use either metal T-posts or wooden posts, both will work. These are less expensive than a wooden privacy fence and some chain link fences. The amount of labor needed is generally pretty light and should probably only take 2 days to complete the project depending on how long the concrete that you are using takes to set.

The Fence Bible

For anyone wanting to build their own fences of any kind, this is all you need to figure out how to do that. This is a complete guide on all things fences from small garden fencing to large scale fencing jobs. This is great for beginners who not only want to learn how to put up their fence, but maybe you aren’t sure or are not aware of other types of fencing that might be better for the job you are trying to complete. Find the best route to finishing your job and not get stuck with a big mess that will take you more time to clean up and start over.

If you are looking to keep out larger animals or kids you might want a high 6ft fence. This is perfect for a high security styled enclosure to keep larger animals such as deer from jumping over the fence or kids from wandering into areas that you don’t want them. This can also be used to line certain areas of property if you want a high mesh styled fence.

This is better if you are looking for sturdy but short welded wire fence. Keeping smaller critters out of a garden or setting up a perimeter for a small dog or other animal, this is perfect. You can also use this effectively if buried to keep out rabbits and other burrowing animals from ruining your garden or lawn. This is a good gauge too but its up to your discretion on the style you want and need for your project.
